Tour Update
The March 2013 is in the final stages of completion and will offer once again some stunning South Island riding!!
If you are worried about transportation issues whether this is yourself or your bike box please don’t. All bike boxes will be sent to Wanaka, and the bikes will be packed ready for you to leave with after a nice long soak in the hot pools and a celebratory dinner with maybe a drink or two. If you have any queries regarding leaving Wanaka to get to your home town please contact us at info@southernalpstour.co.nz and we will be more than happy to help you out.
We are able to help with airport shuttles whether this is in Christchurch or Wanaka also.
We will have a bike mechanic travelling with us for the full tour as well as massage being available at the end of every stage.
Tour Update and Results Day 3
Not much of an update today, the weather gods turned on us and in the interests if keeping everyone moving and as safe and warm as possible we made the decision to have non-contested stages from Ross to Franz Josef.
We left Greymouth in the cold but at least it was dry, that didn’t last very long at all! Within minutes it was bucketing with rain and the riders were doing it tough out there on the road. The riders were pretty happy to get into Ross and take shelter in the pub by the warm fire. Hot chocolates and pies all round were the order of the day. Then no shame was shown with folk stripping down and getting into warm dry clothes and applying more chamois cream.
Once we were warm and dry it was off to Hari Hari for lunch, Pukeko Tearooms looked after us a treat and the rain eased up for the stop as well which was good. The offer was made for people to jump in cars if they wanted, only 2 A grade riders took up the option tho, goes to show who the tough riders are I guess…..
The McDonald pain train took off first, I’m pretty sure they were just using the 60km stretch of road for some TTT practice. Maybe we should give them the TTT win today after they missed out yesterday? Huge thanks to Russell and Mike for riding in with B grade to make life easier for them, they’ve been doing it hard with a small field, they have worked super well together all tour and I’m sure they appreciated the efforts of the lads. I heard a rumour that the Pink Ladies took control of C grade again and organised their own pit stops on the way into Franz Josef.
Have to say that the ride/drive into Franz Josef is absolutely spectacular no matter what the weather is doing. If you get the chance to head this way either on tour or not then make sure you take advantage of the opportunity to check out the scenery.
